Background for retreat
- There is evidence of significant educational benefits for students who participate in these high impact practices. They are positively associated with student learning and with student retention.
- Some of the more common HIPs are: First-year seminars & experiences, Culminating experiences/Capstone courses, Service or Community-based learning, Undergraduate research, Writing-intensive courses, Learning & Living/Learning communities, Internships or field experience, Diversity/Global learning, and Study abroad.
Guiding Questions
- What HIPs are happening in your unit (office, department, college)?
- What HIPs would you like to have in your unit that aren’t in place currently?
- What is being done to implement and assess new HIPs in your unit? Are you getting student feedback on HIPs to improve current offerings?
- How are faculty and students made aware of HIPs in your unit?
- Who are the key points of contact to collect data on HIPs?
- What kind of questions are being asked in grant proposals related to HIPs and how can IPAR assist in helping grant writers respond?
Expected Outcomes; Following the retreat,
- Attendees will have a better understanding of what High Impact Practices are and why they are important.
