Data Governance Accomplishments
Key data governance accomplishments over the course of fiscal year 2022 include:
- The Data Stewardship Committee implemented a data standards approval procedure for data systems that are highly integrated with other data systems.
- Enterprise Data Management Support Services developed a landscape document to be utilized as part of the Enterprise and Data Architecture Center of Excellence (CoE) initiative.
- A User Access Control Standard was implemented in response to the UNC Board of Governors policy 1400.3.
- An evaluation was completed for the Microsoft Purview Data Governance tool. The university is currently implementing the Purview Data Governance product and will begin ingesting metadata from its enterprise data systems late Fall.
- The annual ECU Data Retreat was held in February and was focused on Health Sciences Data.
- ECU’s Central Data Request system was expanded and now includes 12 departments.
- A faculty and staff PII data guidelines document was created to assist with data request approval decisions.
- The Educational Research Data Request Process was established.
- The Business Intelligence team in IPAR deployed new Power BI Dashboards including those devoted to Enrollment Management and the Student life cycle.
- College of Education and ITCS created the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) Dashboard to monitor ECU’s EPP programs’ admissions, degree, enrollment, internship placement, and diversity. The dashboard is also used to assess ECU’s performance against the national Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA).
- The Office of Institutional Integrity conducted HIPAA Security Rule compliance auditing on systems across the University landscape. Additional HIPAA Privacy and Security activities included: annual HIPAA Risk Assessments, annual HIPAA Privacy Walkthroughs in University clinical areas, University HIPAA Regulation, migration of HIPAA Privacy and Security policies to HIPAA Privacy Manual and HIPAA Security Manual, and oversight of the University’s HIPAA Privacy and Security Compliance Programs.
- The Office of Institutional Integrity assumed oversight of the University’s Identity Theft Protection Program with year-one goals of developing a University Identity Theft Protection Regulation and inventory database.
