Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2021

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and in the spirit of promoting security awareness at ECU, the Information Security Office updated in time for October, the three Best Practices in Information Security manuals published for three audiences:

  1. All Employees
  2. ECU Management
  3. IT Support Staff

These manuals are linked from the ECU website article entitled Information Security Best Practices Manuals. The three manuals were revised for 2021 and published during the first week of October. These manuals are easy to find. From the ECU website search feature, if you simply search for “Best Practices” it will be the top search result. Overall, content for key items of strategic importance where added to the manuals, including security awareness training, vulnerability management, security incident reporting, MFA, sensitive data storage and transmission, mobile device guidance, and clear screen and desk policy. I wanted to take a moment and summarize some of the key content changes in the three revised manuals:

Best Practices in Information Security for Employees: Standards for Protecting the Information in Your Care

Best Practices in Information Security for ECU Management: Standards for Protecting the Information in Your Care

  • Content to reflect the security awareness course for ECU Management published in Cornerstone
  • Importance of instilling within your department a culture of reporting security concerns
  • Oversight to ensure that servers managed within your department meet IT requirements such as the ITCS Server Assessment, and ECU Technical Vulnerability Management Plan

Best Practices in Information Security for IT Support Staff: Standards for Protecting the Information in Your Care

  • Content on technical vulnerability management
  • Content aligned with the university’s Cyber Security Incident Response Plan and related procedures

The overarching theme for Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2021 is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.” The theme empowers individuals and organizations to own their role in protecting their part of cyberspace. If everyone does their part – implementing stronger security practices, raising community awareness, educating vulnerable audiences or training employees – our interconnected world will be safer and more resilient for everyone.
